What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is a bony bump that forms at the base of the big toe. This bump causes the joint to move out of place and bend in toward the other toes. When this happens, the bump can interfere with your life on several different levels. Not only can it make wearing shoes difficult, but it can become a source of constant pain.

Do I Have a Bunion? And Do I Need Surgery?

While some bunions may go unnoticed, they can soon develop into a constant source of pain. So even if you have the beginnings of a bunion, we recommend starting some form of treatment. For many, the best option is a quick bunion surgery.
The first step is to see if you have a bunion or some other foot condition. During your consultation, Dr. Jam can diagnose your bunion and develop the best way to treat it.
The most common signs and symptoms of a bunion include:
  • Bump on the foot at the base of the big toe
  • Swelling or soreness around the joint of the big toe
  • Thickened skin at the base of the big toe
  • Corns or calluses
  • Chronic foot pain
  • Limited movement of the big toe
It may be time for bunion surgery if your symptoms include:
  • Continual toe or foot pain
  • A visible bump on the joint
  • Decreased ability to move your toe or foot
  • Difficulty wearing shoes

We Made Them All Happy

” I’m a heel lover. I love my pumps. Unfortunately, my bunions have made wearing them an excruciating experience for most of my life. Even just walking in general has been painful. I finally mustered up the courage to undergo surgery and I’m so glad I chose Dr.Jam. He is one of the most caring doctors I’ve dealt with. His gentle demeanor put me at ease and he explained everything about the procedure to me in full detail. I would recommend him to anyone seeking a stress free experience with this sort of thing.”

Bunion Treatment Options

The first treatment choice for most patients is nonsurgical. Nonsurgical treatment options include:
  • Wearing more comfortable shoes
  • Padding and taping the foot
  • Taking medication to control the pain
  • Adding shoe inserts to help distribute the pressure of walking more evenly
If bunions are unresponsive to nonsurgical methods, bunion surgery may be your best option.
Dr. Jam provides several different surgical options for his patients, including minimally invasive bunion surgery.

Bunionectomy

Most of Dr. Jam’s bunion surgery methods involve a bunionectomy. A bunionectomy is a procedure designed to achieve the following:
  • Removed the inflamed tissue around the toe joint
  • Straighten the toe by removing some of the bone
  • Realign the bones of the toe to the natural angle
  • Permanently fix the bones of the affected toe joint
While it may be possible for you to walk immediately after your bunion surgery, a full recovery will likely take two months or more. Each situation is different, and Dr. Jam will inform you what you can expect for your treatment.

How you can help prevent Bunions from forming?

Some steps may help prevent, or at least slow, the progression of bunions:
  • Avoid shoes with a narrow toe box.
  • If your foot flattens excessively, make sure you wear supportive shoes. If necessary, get custom orthotics from your podiatrist.
  • See your podiatrist at the first signs or symptoms of a bunion deformity. Early treatment may stop or slow its progression.

Bunion Surgery Recovery & Results

Many patients can walk the same day as their bunion surgery. But generally, the recovery window for bunion surgery is six to eight weeks. However, a full recovery from bunion removal takes an average of four to six months. During the first couple of days, some discomfort is not unusual. But any swelling or discomfort can be treated with medication.
One common aspect of recovery is to wear a protective boot for a couple weeks to protect your foot. Before and after your surgery, Dr. Jam will provide you with complete instructions for ensuring a smooth recovery.
Some core aspects of a healthy recovery include:
  • Avoid getting stiches wet
  • Keep your foot elevated and iced
  • Wear shoes with plenty of room (after your boot)
  • Avoid driving early on
  • Avoid strenuous activity until approved by Dr. Jam
