Foot and Ankle Fractures That Most People Neglect

What causes foot pain?

  • Trauma, disease and injuries are the most likely causes of foot pain.
  • Poor biomechanical alignment and the type of footwear can also cause pain or discomfort.
  • Shoes that fit tight or are tied too tightly can cause pain on the top of the foot.
  • High heels can cause pain around the ball of your foot just below your toes.

Ankle fractures

When the bones of the legs break or crack, the injury is called a fracture. Affected individuals experience sudden severe pain and swelling, followed by difficulty and inability in bearing weight on the injured foot. The swelling, bruising, and tenderness are maximal over the injured malleoli. In the ankle, three different bones can be fractured: tibia, fibula, and talus. Foot and ankle fractures are common injuries among people of all ages specially those involved with a wide range of athletic activities, including ballet dancers, snowboarders and basketball players because of the physical demands placed on their ankles.

Sprained ankles often result from a fall, a sudden twist, or a blow that forces the ankle joint out of its normal position. Symptoms of ankle sprains include:

  • Pain or soreness
  • Bruising and swelling
  • Difficulty walking
  • Stiffness in the joint

Achilles tendon rupture

Achilles tendon rupture is when the Achilles tendon breaks and rupturing occurs while performing actions requiring explosive acceleration. Here is a list of activities that might cause your tendons to rupture if you are not careful.

  • Poorly fitting or inadequate shoes
  • Inadequate warm-up or Inadequate proper conditioning
  • Jogging or running on hard surface
  • Repeated steroid injections (our office advises against steroid injections involving the Achilles)
  • Trauma to the ankle
  • Tense calf muscles prior to exercise
  • Having flat feet
  • Tight Achilles Tendon (Equinus) or Prior injury to Achilles Tendon or Heel Spurs
  • Calcification of the Achilles Tendon (AICT Achilles Insertional Calcific Tendinosis)

What are my solutions for treatment of foot and ankle fractures or Achilles tendon Injuries?

In more severe cases, surgery may be required to adequately treat foot injuries. Surgery often involves repairing the damaged ligament or ligaments. Your foot and ankle surgeon will select the surgical procedure best suited for your case based on the type and severity of your injury as well as your activity level. The candidates best suited for operative repair included healthy, active individuals who wish to return to sports activities.
